Loreal Vita Lift Vitamin C
My relationship with L'Oréal's Revitalift Vitamin C 10% Concentrate started the same way as many of my other skincare connections: through a review. Renée (otherwise known as Gothamista) recommended it in one of her YouTube videos as being a great product to take while traveling. My current vitamin C serum was watery and came in a glass container, and I was worried about it leaking and/or breaking during my travels. Since the Revitalift vitamin C has a thicker consistency and comes in a metal tube, it seemed like a good alternative. Little did I know what strange adventures lay ahead of me!
Ingredients
The ingredients list is fairly short: Propylene Glycol, Dimethicone, Ascorbic Acid, Glycerin, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Lauroyl Lysine, Acrylonitrile/Methyl Methacrylate/Vinylidene Chloride Copolymer, Adenosine, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Isobutane, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate. Ascorbic acid is my favorite type of vitamin C, and I find it to be the most effective at brightening and getting rid of dark spots. I think 10% is a good middle ground in terms of vitamin C concentration. If you have extremely sensitive skin, you could still start with a lower concentration or maybe one of the derivatives that isn't as sensitizing.
This formula has silicones, in the form of dimethicone, cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 dimethicone, and dimethicone crosspolymer. The presence of these is SUPER obvious in how the product feels, but I'll discuss that in a minute.
Other notable ingredients areadenosine, which helps fight wrinkles,hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, which moisturizes the skin, and pentaerythrityl tetra-di-t-butyl hydroxyhydrocinnamate, an antioxidant.
Usage
This is where things get a little…unpleasant. And a lot of this is just personal preference on my part, so don't let it be a complete deterrent for you. I just have strong feelings about how this stuff feels on my skin, and let me tell you, it's weird.
Granted, I think I should preface this by saying I'm not a makeup person. I don't use primers often, and I don't use foundation pretty much ever. I have tried some primers in the past, but the texture of them mostly weirds me out. This product feels exactly like a primer, most likely because of the silicones. I get the feeling I'm putting this sealing layer on my face, and the texture is heavier than I like. It is somewhat granular, which I tried to capture in the photo above. It's not scratchy, and you can't feel the granules anymore after you rub it in your hands a little.
The product is strangely exothermic, and I have no idea why. If anyone is aware of the science behind this, please let me know! I feel it warming up as I rub it between my hands, and it has a warming sensation on my face that isn't enjoyable for me. It is especially uncomfortable in the summer months when I'm trying to cool down my skin and get rid of inflammation. The good news is that it is a short-lived sensation, and the warmth hasn't been the cause of additional redness or irritation.
With Revitalift vitamin C, you don't get a lot of oxidizing like you might with other serums. Since it is safely packaged in a metal tube, it isn't exposed to light or air nearly as much. One downside to this is that there is a possibility of clogging, which I had happen with my first tube. No matter how much I squeezed, nothing would come out! The tube ended up cracking, so I had to get the product out through that hole. It was not the best situation! Thankfully my second tube has not had these issues.
Results
Honestly, the only redeemable thing about Revitalift vitamin C is the positive changes I've seen in my skin after using it. It has done a great job brightening, and I was seeing a difference in brightness as early as a week into using it. It serves as a fantastic tool for lightening dark spots, and I've observed a few on my face lightening over a couple of months. I just started using it on my hands (which are positively covered in freckles!) and I have seen a massive reduction in the darkness of those spots.
I've noticed a difference in the texture of my skin, and I think the best way I could describe it is an overall smoothing. I think that when I'm wearing it some of the smooth look is from the silicones, but even when I don't have it on I can tell that there has been a change. I've seen a textural improvement on my hands as well, which I'm thrilled about because my hands were looking a little scary!
I'm torn as to whether I will keep using this. Most likely I will go back soon to my favorite vitamin C serum, the COSRX Triple C Lightning Liquid. (See my review here!) The texture is just much more enjoyable, and I still get a satisfying brightening effect.
It is fairly affordable, currently costing around $25 for 1 oz of product. It lasts for a little over a month, longer than I thought it would actually. If you think you could put up with the primer-like texture of this product, I believe that the clear results make it a worthwhile try!
